Scrap Gold Value Calculator

Old jewelry, dental gold, and broken chains are priced on two things: how much they weigh and how pure they are. Enter the weight, choose the unit and the karat, and add the spot price you see quoted. The calculator converts everything to troy ounces of pure gold and multiplies by spot. This is the raw metal value — refiners and buyers pay a percentage of it, never the full amount.

Calculate scrap gold value

Enter the spot price YOU see quoted

Refiners pay a fraction of melt. Scrap buyers deduct a refining margin, so an offer well below this figure is normal. Get more than one quote, and weigh items by karat group separately.

One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams — not the 28.35 grams of a kitchen ("avoirdupois") ounce, which is the single most common scrap-gold mistake. Purity is the karat over 24: 14K gold is 14/24, or about 58.3% gold by weight. Multiply weight in troy ounces by that fraction and by spot, and you have the pure-metal value. For how this differs from a finished coin's price, see our gold coin value guide.

Estimate only — not financial advice. This calculator runs entirely in your browser, stores nothing, sets no cookies, and makes no external calls. It does not fetch a live gold price — every result is based on the spot price and figures YOU enter, and on each coin's published gold content. Gold prices are volatile and can fall as well as rise; dealer premiums, bid/ask spreads, condition, and any numismatic value are not reflected here. Confirm every number with a reputable dealer and live market data, and consult a licensed professional before buying, selling, or making a tax decision. Editorial terms & risk disclosure.
